Top Secret (A Clandestine Operations Novel)
127 Top Secret (A Clandestine Operations Novel)
Putnam Adult 2014 0399171231 / 9780399171239 HARDCOVER Used; Good
Small remainder mark In the first weeks after World War II, a squeaky-clean new second lieutenant named James D. Cronley Jr. is spotted and recruited for a new enterprise that will eventually be transformed into something called the CIA. One war may have ended, but another one has already begun, against an enemy that is bigger, smarter, and more vicious: the Soviet Union. The Soviets have hit the ground running, and Cronley’s job is to help frustrate them, harass them, and spy on them any way he can. His recruiter thinks he has the potential to become an asset—though, of course, he could also screw up spectacularly. And in his first assignment, it looks like that’s exactly what might happen. He’s got seven days to extract a vital piece of information from a Soviet agent, but Cronley’s managed to rile up his superior officers (he seems to have a talent for it), and if he fails, it could be one of the shortest intelligence careers in history. There are enemies everywhere—and, as Cronley is about to find out, some of them even wear the same uniform he does.

Trap Line
129 Trap Line
Vintage 1998 0375700692 / 9780375700699 TRADE PAPERBACK Used; Very Good
Vintage Crime/Black Lizard 1998. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: Very Good. Jacket Condition: none. Small remainder mark From the bestselling author of Bad Monkey and Razor Girl and Bill Montalbano comes this compelling thriller set in Key West on the southern most end of America. With its dozens of outlying islands and the native Conchs’ historically low regard for the law, Key West is a smuggler’s paradise. All that’s needed are the captains to run the contraband. Breeze Albury is one of the best fishing captains on the Rock, and he’s in no mood to become the Machine’s delivery boy. So the Machine sets out to persuade him. It starts out by taking away Albury’s livelihood. Then it robs him of his freedom. But when the Machine threatens Albury’s son, the washed-out wharf rat turns into a raging, sea-going vigilante. In Trap Line, Hiaasen and Montalbano pit a handful of scruffy Conchs against an armada of drug lords, crooked cops, and homicidal marine lowlife. The result is a crime novel of dizzying velocity, filled with wrenching plot twists, grimily authentic characters, and enough local color for a hundred tropical shirts. It’s the Key West the tourist brochures won’t tell you about: a place as crooked as Al Capone’s Chicago and as irredeemably violent as Wyatt Earp’s Tombstone.

134 Vintage Mexican Art Pottery Clay Maya Seated Male Figurine Statue
LONGHEAD
Vintage Mexican Art Pottery Clay Maya Seated Male Figurine Statue. Sitting Male Clay Figurine Statue-1 Pc. Measures: 9" tall, 5 1/2" wide. In wonderful vintage condition, purchased in the early 1970’s in Mexico. The Maya were a smaller race of people with dark skin, dark eyes and straight black hair, but to them what was considered physically beautuliful was not the way they were born, but a long sloping forehead and slightly crossed-eyes.
It didn’t matter what social class you were were in – the Priests and warriors, merchants and artisans, loaders, bricklayers, woodcutters, peasants, and slaves alike all desired this type of beauty. The Mayas prized a long sloping forehead. It is thought that this is because it resembled an ear of corn – not only the staple of their diets, but they believed that it was from the corn that all humans were created. The corn god himself (Yum Kaax) was depicted with an elongated head with a husk attached to it. To achieve the sleek straight elegant look that the Maya admired, it had to start when their babies were born. Really you had no say in the look at all. The Maya would bind the newborn infant’s head between two boards for several days. The infant was tied on a board and then another board was attached at an angle. This then gradually increased the pressure on the baby’s head creating a deeply sloped forehead. It was common for a child to die from this process, but as the sloped head was considered extremely attractive, the parents ignored the risk and deformation continued. Whilst it was an extremely dangerous practice, it has been found that it had no effect on the intelligence of the child, as the brain has a great deal of plasticity in infancy and was able to accommodate itself to the new shape. The Mayas also held slightly crossed-eyes in high esteem. Apart from changing the actual shape of their children’s heads, the Maya parents also attempted to induce this condition. They would do this by hanging a piece of thread between the infant’s eyes with a stone or ball of resin attached that caused their eyes to focus on it, eventually causing the eyes to rotate inwards. This is still practiced today with the Maya of today still considering crossed-eyes to be physically beautiful.

As we already mentioned elsewhere, this title has the lot . . . including persuasive evidence that animated corpses (that’s zombies to you, fella) used to be gray and had see-through rib-cages. Just shows you how far medical science has come in the almost sixty intervening years.
